I teach and research, and in my spare time, I make video games. I have been teaching in the Department of Communications since 2008. For CMNS 340, it was a pleasure to reinvent a course created by my colleague Marlo Edwards a while ago and re-think the spaces mainstream and alternative media occupy in our current media landscape. I centered the course around media literacy as a main framework in which we evaluate media we are both exposed to and design ourselves. During the course we considered multiple audiences, perspectives and responses. Students were presented with a brief on the first day of class. Then they had to engage with it via digital case studies, posters populating an imaginary space, media projects, counter-narrative projects responding to these media projects, and finally video pitches, building on either of the past assignment ideas. This all led to this wonderful work designed, curated and posted by CMNS 340 students in Winter 2022. Thank you all for this wonderful experience and for venturing into a new course!

Mitch

Hi, my name is Mitch Pelletier and I am a fourth year business student at Okanagan College. I am pursuing a BBA with a marketing specialty. This course gave me the opportunity to showcase my creativity and create real pieces of media. Being able to have full creative freedom was something that benefited me in this course but it definitely took some time to get used to. Check out some of the media I created for The Cascadia Music Festival!

Quinn

My name is Quinn Toner, I am a fourth year business student at Okanagan College, and I am currently approaching graduation after this final semester. Some of my favourite hobbies include skateboarding, chess, and guitar. After four years of taking business courses, it was really fun being able to take Media in Action to do something more creative and learn more about media in general. After completing a digital case study on Old School RuneScape the rest of my work became centered around video games from my childhood which has been fun to revisit and explore.

Jana

Hi, I'm Jana Bomans! Nice to virtually meet you.

All of my work showcased on this website was created for one of many communication courses leading to my completion of a BBA with a major in management and concentration in communications. This course particularly gave me the freedom I’ve never experienced before in a classroom setting to explore my process of idea generation and execution which I am so grateful for. When I tell people I’m completing a BBA I always get the question “what do you want to do after you graduate?” but my answer honestly changes almost daily. All I know is that I want to be my own boss one day and have fun while doing it. This course definitely opened me up to the fun to be had within brand communications and new understandings of the world through the use of modern and historical media. On a bit more of a personal note; I grew up in the Okanagan so I’m no stranger to outdoor sports. Although my favorite pastimes are yoga and beach volleyball, I’d say I’m a jack of all trades when it comes to sports but a master of none. I love margarita pizza, singing loudly in my car, reading on the beach, and spontaneous adventures with friends.

Kyle

Hi, my name is Kyle Kieneker and I am currently in my fourth year of the BBA with a specialty in management at Okanagan College. I’ve had some interesting courses before but through this course I’ve been able to have much more freedom over my assignments than ever before. We were able to showcase our creative efforts while learning how to consume and critically think about media, an experience every student should have, regardless of their field. The media we’ve created throughout this semester has been an extremely engaging experience, and the knowledge in media editing and critical analysis have been a great addition to my skills.

Peter

I am a senior student, having worked in the provincial government for over 30 years. This is my last term at OC in the Advanced Comms Cert program, and my second digital media class with Prof Fratiloiu. Although it’s been a steep learning curve, Ral and my fellow students have been very kind and patient. I really enjoyed 340’s Cascadia assignments, the concept of the work, and seeing others’ creative and very impressive work.
The final assignment was a video pitch focussing on an aspect of our media development. The videos created were amazing and if you can, go and check out. Although this course was quite challenging, being unaccustomed to the tech involved, it was an incredible learning and practical experience.
I hope you enjoy seeing the work we all completed.  Cheers!
